The FiRa® Consortium, the global industry association driving interoperability and certification for ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, today congratulated the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on launching a proceeding to update its rules on UWB spectrum use. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) represents an important step toward providing regulatory clarity that can accelerate the deployment of secure, centimeter-level precision ranging and location technologies across consumer, automotive, and industrial markets.

UWB technology enables centimeter-level ranging and secure proximity detection, underpinning applications ranging from digital car keys and secure payments to asset tracking, accessibility solutions, public transportation, and industrial automation. Through its certification program and technical specifications, the FiRa Consortium works to ensure interoperability, security, and a consistent user experience across UWB-enabled devices and ecosystems.
