California requires an applicant seeking a first notary public commission to complete a six-hour course of study approved by the Secretary of State. A commissioned notary may use the three-hour refresher only when the notary holds a current California commission, has previously completed an approved six-hour course, and applies for reappointment before the current commission expires.
Both notrai courses are online and self-paced while enforcing the required instructional time. Students may complete the course over multiple sessions, with their progress saved between visits.
