The National Catholic Reporter wins 70+ Catholic Media Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Catholic Reporter (NCR), along with its sister platforms, Global Sisters Report (GSR), EarthBeat and GSR en español, earned more than 70 honors at the 2025 Catholic Media Awards, solidifying its place as a leading voice in independent Catholic journalism. NCR's news editor, Carol Zimmermann, also received the Catholic Media Association's highest honor at the conclusion of the group's annual meeting on June 27 in Phoenix.
Zimmermann, who joined NCR in August 2024 after more than three decades in Catholic media, was named winner of the 2025 St. Francis de Sales Award - often called the "Franny" - recognizing her exceptional contributions to Catholic journalism.
NCR, Global Sisters Report (GSR) and EarthBeat won prizes across a wide range of categories, including investigations, environmental reporting, political analysis and design. In total, the organization's accolades included 25 first place, 16 second place, 15 third place, and numerous honorable mentions. The awards honored stories published in 2024.
NCR reporter Camillo Barone captured 10 awards, including five first place honors for his coverage on global and domestic issues. Katie Collins Scott earned 10 awards, including four first place wins and third place for Writer of the Year. Investigative reporter Brian Fraga brought home five awards, honored for his coverage of church politics and conservative Catholic influence in the U.S. electorate.
GSR's Africa regional correspondent Doreen Ajiambo garnered seven awards for her coverage of environmental crises, sisters' advocacy and feature profiles. Environmental correspondent Brian Roewe earned seven awards, including honorable mention for Writer of the Year. NCR designer Angie Von Slaughter won first place for Graphic Artist/Designer of the Year.
GSR's Latin America regional correspondent Rhina Guidos earned seven awards for storytelling on immigration and faith in action, while GSR received honorable mention for Spanish Publication of the Year and four additional Spanish-language awards.
